Abstract

The current study tried to identify a solution to youngsters’ low social distancing compliance during Aperitivo time, in Milan. It was found that the three main factors leading youngsters towards a low compliance were negative feelings of pandemic fatigue, progressive distraction and low Covid-19 threat perception. To tackle these factors, seven colourful-electrical platforms placed one meter from each other were created. It was found that the platforms made youngsters comply to social distancing significantly more than the observed control group, which did not have an intervention. In addition, it was measured that people in the experimental group respected social distancing more independently from the time. People in the control group however lowered their compliance towards the rule throughout the time in which their behaviour was observed. This may suggest that the platforms had an effect against the progressive distraction of the participants. Even though this was a short-term study, the results are promising. A long-term study that includes the observation of the long-term effects of the intervention on the field is advised. Key words: Covid-19, Social distancing, Aperitivo, Pandemic fatigue, Progressive
