Abstract

The city of Eindhoven and its surrounding region have faced a multitude of challenges over the course of its history. This also includes matters of mobility and the transition towards sustainable transportation. However, little research has yet been conducted on the mobility policies in the region and their effects on equality. In an attempt to contribute to this knowledge gap, this research investigates the aforementioned topic through the theoretical lens of mobility justice. The central research question that was posed for this research is: “How does policy on sustainable mobility contribute to a just mobility system within the Eindhoven Brainport region?”. During this research, it was found that mobility policies and mobility justice share a complex relation. Levels of equality depend on matters of availability, accessibility, human behaviour and participatory planning. Differentiations within these aspects may result in both positive and negative effects on equality. In order to achieve more just transport systems, a diverse set of sustainable transport modalities is required. Additionally, a change of current paradigms, norms and values must take place in which equality becomes a central aspect of mobility policies as opposed to the precondition it is currently considered to be.
