Abstract

Over the last couple of years, I have had the opportunity to develop not only my research skills but also myself as a young academic in the world of art history. I have continuously written papers and essays on women artists motivated by my feminist point of view, feeling the need to write about and research those women who have been overlooked in the dominant canon of art history – and often still are. Throughout my studies, I developed a preference for contextual research that explores multiple sides of an artist’s life in order to, hopefully, gain a better and deeper understanding of their artistic practice and the resulting artworks. I find it especially exciting when I am researching a woman artist whose work is embedded in feminism, as I can then combine two passions into an academic project. This thesis is a culmination of both of these elements and demonstrates not only my focus on underrepresented women artists, but also my preference and love for contextual, historical research. It has been wonderful to have the opportunity to enrich this research with archival materials that, fortunately, were available online. I find that there is great power in artist statements, personal notes, and interviews; these get to the core of the artist’s personal perspective. While this thesis process took longer than expected and is also, for me, characterised by many personal struggles that I had to work through, I am proud of the final product and hope you enjoy reading it. I want to express my gratitude to my thesis supervisor, dr. Sonia de Laforcade, for her guidance, expertise, advice, and support throughout this long thesis process. I also want to express my gratitude to my tutor, dr. Mette Gieskes, for her unwavering support throughout this entire master’s programme. Without the foundation and guidance provided by both dr. De Laforcade and dr. Gieskes, I would not have had the confidence to finish this thesis.
