Abstract

This research examines the relationship between gender diversity within corporate governance structures and CSR decoupling. Corporate governance structures analysed upon its relationship to CSR decoupling are: the board of directors, the audit committee, the CSR committee, and top management. Using an international sample comprising of 257 publicly listed companies from the period 2002 to 2022, this research conducts Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), Fixed-effects (FE), and Two-Stage Least Squares (2SLS) analyses to explore this relationship. The outcomes of the analyses provide evidence for a positive association between increased gender diversity in the board of directors and audit committee on the CSR decoupling. These results contradict the expected relationship based on prior literature on the topic, whereby females tend to on average put more weight on transparency, more risk averse, excel in stakeholder communication and have increased ethical sensitivity. To ensure the robustness of the results, alternative measures for CSR decoupling, lagged effects and industry-specific effects are included
