The Relationship Between Attachment, Gender, and Disclosure in a Romantic Relationship

Abstract

The current study aimed to replicate the findings that, in a romantic relationship, men show lower degrees and women show higher degrees of disclosure. It also aimed to replicate the findings that avoidant styles show lower and anxious styles show higher degrees of disclosure. Lastly, it examined whether the influence of attachment on disclosure was particularly true for one of the genders. Two questionnaires were filled out by 170 emerging adults. There was no significant effect of attachment on disclosure, there was no significant effect of gender on disclosure, and there was no significant effect of gender and disclosure on attachment. Thus, the type of attachment and the gender of the participants did not affect the degree of disclosure in a romantic relationship. The information of the current study will help in finding out how to best act when trouble arises on the field of communication in romantic relationships.
