Abstract
Western governments are not acting on the international law and human rights violations committed by Israel. Hence, Palestinians rely on the Palestinian solidarity movement to pressure Western governments to act and hold Israel to account in order to stop the occupation and violations. It appears that a fairly strong and visible international movement in solidarity with the Palestinians has emerged. However, despite their efforts and visibility, the solidarity movement has not yet succeeded in making a lasting change and seems hardly capable of preventing human rights violations. Therefore, this research tries to identify the challenges of the solidarity movement that are withholding the success of putting an end to the occupation. In addition, this research aims to indicate how these challenges could possibly be tackled. In order to achieve this set objective, a qualitative approach has been taken in which semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with actors of Palestinian civil society. In the end, the results show that the Palestinian, solidarity movement in the West faces many different challenges, most of them caused by external factors. Moreover, several different action points were indicated to overcome these challenges in which the movement already shows awareness and adaptability.
