Abstract
Contemporary artist Felipe Pantone creates interactive artworks that allow viewers to formally alter the piece, reflecting the manipulable nature of the digital sphere. This thesis explores Pantone's connection to earlier artists who aimed at reconfigured spectatorship, and situates his methods within discussions on democracy in art. A central aspect of this thesis is the role that exhibition institutions play within the modern and contemporary emphasis on art that is ‘‘open’’ towards the spectator, and how Pantone fits within this context. The central question is: "How does Felipe Pantone's manipulable art balance viewer interaction with institutional display, and what does this imply for the democratic and interactive nature of his work within traditional spaces?" The thesis concludes that Pantone’s work both reflects and fuels ongoing debates about the spectator’s role, the digital revolution's impact, and the future of democratic engagement within institutional settings.
