The Maatschappij tot bevordering der Bouwkunst (the Dutch Society for the Improvement of Architecture) research competition, played a role in the design of workers housing in the Netherlands. This competition served to answer the demands of the Dutch Housing Act of 1901, which was passed to improve the health and safety of the working classes by providing municipalities with guidelines. The competition entries were presented in a traveling exhibition that appealed to large groups from all social classes. None of the designs were realized, but that was not the Society’s intention. The focus was to stimulate creativity among architects for this kind of dwelling. Critics saw the designs as sensible, if a little too conservative. This touring exhibition, the media interest it aroused and the book that the Society published, set the tone for public architectural discourse for decades to come.
