Abstract

The widely argued death of Postmodernism paved the way for a new cultural paradigm. Metamodernism as a structure of feeling seeks to combine Modernism and Postmodernism to navigate through 21st-century contemporary society, where climate change and economic crises threaten a future. The following thesis aims to analyze how Sally Rooney’s Normal People (2018) manifests a Metamodern sensibility in the traditional form of the Modern Bildungsroman. Through textual analysis, this thesis aims to add to existing research on Metamodern literature by providing a study on how Rooney adapts the Bildungsroman to embody a Metamodern sensibility, furthermore researching the continuation of Modern literary conventions with a response to contemporary social context, exemplified through the relationship of protagonists Marianne and Connell as represented in the text.
