Abstract
This thesis investigates the phenomenon of codeswitching in native Dutch lyrics, focusing on the genres of hip-hop and pop. Through a corpus analysis of 400 songs sourced from Genius.com, the study aims to get a better understanding of codeswitching, including the languages involved, the amount of codeswitches per lyric line, the types of codeswitching, the length of the codeswitches and their placement within the lyrics. The findings reveal that codeswitching is prevalent in Dutch music. It highlights that English is the most frequently used language, followed by Spanish and others, reflecting the global influence on Dutch artists. The study categorizes codeswitching into inter-sentential, intra-sentential, and tag-switching, with intra-sentential switching being the most common, particularly in hip-hop. Additionally, the research examines the length and placement of codeswitches within lyric lines, revealing that hip-hop songs often feature more complex and strategically placed codeswitches.
