University’s contribution to society: exploratory research on academic skills that are conditional for participation in TDCOPs

dc.description.abstractIn the past years, the contribution of universities to society have been increasingly questioned. A mechanism for universities to enhance their contribution to society, as it enables the co-production of knowledge and interventions between academic and non-academic actors, is the transdisciplinary community of practice (TDCOP). This thesis investigates what academic skills are conditional for universities to enhance their contribution to society by participating in TDCOPs. Through a qualitative exploratory research based on grounded theory, two cases were examined. The findings of this research show that the academic skills teamwork, critical thinking, open-mindedness, reflection, strategic managing of results, communication, project-management, and research skills are conditional for universities that want to enhance their contribution to society through the participation in TDCOPs. In addition, this research shows that there are also conditions for the conditional academic skills, namely the type of TDCOP and the life cycle stage of the TDCOP the university participates in. Suggestions for further research are, among others, a more extensive investigation of the cases by executing direct and/or participatory observations and research on what academic skills are conditional per type of TD, per type of TDCOP, and per phase of the TDCOP life cycle.en_US
