Abstract
This thesis investigates the correlations between Big Five personality traits and populist
attitudes in the Netherlands, such as anti-elitism, people-centrism, and direct democracy, using
anti-elitism as an indicator trait of these attitudes. This thesis utilizes data from the LISS panel
to perform multiple regression analyses on the effect of Big Five personality traits on populist
attitudes, with notable findings. Openness to experience has a negative relationship with
populist attitudes, while neuroticism shows an opposite correlation, suggesting emotionally
fragile people might be more inclined toward populist rhetoric. Conscientiousness was found
to correlate positively with anti-elitism while extraversion and agreeableness did not predict
populist attitudes significantly. The study emphasizes the significance of psychological and
socioeconomic factors when understanding political behavior.
