This thesis seeks to analyze the critical implementation factors for Nature-based Solutions in the cross-border area of Flanders and the Netherlands. Three different cases were studied in the cross-border area. These cases involve the Markdal on Dutch side of the border, the Mark on Flemish side of the border and the Merkske which lies exactly on the border. First, this study looks into the definitions of Nature-based Solutions. This concept is part of a new discourse and is challenging the traditional engineering paradigm. Subsequently it studies how different factors influence the implementation of Nature-based Solutions. Not all factors have a negative influence on the implementation of Nature-based Solutions, there is also attention given to factors which have a positive influence on the implementation. Finally, this study proposes a list of factors of high importance when it comes to the implementation of Nature-based Solutions. These six factors are ‘political will and long-term commitment’, ‘available financial resources’, ‘property ownership complexities’, ‘supportive policy and legal framework’, ‘counter-discourses’ and ‘public awareness and support’.en_US
