Abstract
This master thesis study focussed on the implications that need to be considered when developing the ‘Green Barometer’ as accountability system for sustainability, for operation rooms in and between hospitals. The two main topics of this study were accountability and sustainability assessment (specifically focussing on surgical tool use). A qualitative research approach was used to collect empirical data. As of today, no sustainability assessment tool or benchmark has been developed for the field of healthcare, and little academic literature is available on the development or introduction of an accountability system in the field of healthcare. The key findings contribute to the theoretical extension of current knowledge on accountability systems for sustainability, specifically for the field of healthcare. Furthermore, managerial implications and recommendations, as well as a prototype of the checklist for the surgical tool use section of the ‘Green Barometer’ were developed resulting from the key insights of this study.
