Abstract
Waste management gained attention in the literature. However, previous literature on recycle, reuse and reduce behaviour has rarely examined a product specific analysis. This research investigates how and why consumers are involved in recycle, reuse and reduce behaviour for each type of product. Furthermore, this research identifies the determinants of recycle, reuse and reduce behaviour. This research has an exploratory nature and therefore a qualitative method was chosen. In total, 18 in-depth interviews were held. Inductive coding was used to analyse the interviews in order to compare the data. The drivers of recycle, reuse and reduce behaviour differ for each type of product. Results show that social pressure, convenience, monetary incentives and a habit are determinates of recycle behaviour. Secondly, convenience, monetary incentives, environmental and charity concerns are important determinants of reuse behaviour. Lastly, environmental concern is the most important determinant of reduce behaviour. Findings suggest that it is important to focus on the different products that are recycled, reused and reduced, because for each type of product individuals are driven by different determinants. This implies that not one approach for recycle, not one approach for reuse and not one approach for reduce behaviour is effective since every product deserves a tailor-made approach. These findings could be added to the literature. In addition, this research contributes to the Theory of Planned Behaviour. These results are helpful for policymakers since these findings give insights into the drivers of recycle, reuse and reduce behaviour. Policymakers could use these findings for their policies and campaigns in order to enhance recycle, reuse and reduce behaviour. Lastly, this research helps to understand the drivers of waste management behaviour. Enhancing recycle, reuse and reduce behaviour is useful to tackle the waste problem.
