Abstract
The difference between Spanish and Dutch adolescents with respect to text appreciation considering two different narrative perspectives, namely character- and writer-text perspective, was researched with 53 participants between 18 and 30 years old. Text appreciation was measured in terms of attractivity, information value, trustworthiness, and perceived distance between the reader and the writer. Differences between Dutch and Spanish adolescents were expected due to cultural differences, specifically considering individualism. This experiment was conducted by asking participants to fill out a Qualtrics questionnaire in which they evaluated to what extend they agreed with the statements with respect to the different narrative perspectives. Results show a significant effect of perspective on information value, as the writer-text perspective was evaluated higher than the character-text perspective. Furthermore, the writer-text perspective was considered to be significantly more trustworthy than the character-text perspective. With respect to the cross-cultural analysis, a significant difference was found between the Spanish and Dutch participants with respect to attractivity. Spanish adolescents evaluated both perspectives higher in terms of attractiveness. Nationality did not seem to have a significant influence on information value, trustworthiness, and perceived distance between the reader and the writer. It seems that individualism does not have a definite influence on all the aspects of text appreciation. Nevertheless, recommendations are given in order to improve the construct so that a more accurate answer towards the research question Is there a difference regarding the influence of narrative perspective on text appreciation in written news stories between Spanish and Dutch adolescents? can be provided. This study provides a first insight of international differences considering this subject.
