Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of the effectiveness of green product innovations and the use of green process innovations on manufacturing firms’ economic performance with an emphasis on the role of energy consumption growth. The dataset consists of 170 responses collected through a survey which was disseminated among Dutch manufacturing firms. Respondents supplied information on product- and process innovations as well as various performance indicators. The regression analyses performed to test the hypothesized relationships did not provide support. Green innovations appeared to be unrelated to economic performance in manufacturing firms. The effectiveness of green product innovations was non-significantly related to revenue growth and production cost growth. Additionally, the use of green process innovations was of non-significant influence to production cost growth. Furthermore, the role of energy consumption growth was of negligible importance in explaining production cost growth changes as a result of the use of green process innovations. This study was unsuccessful in invigorating the business case for green innovations from an economic perspective. However, neither did it indicate inferior economic performance of manufacturing firms with green innovation strategies. Therefore, given the rising attention for green issues, such strategies remain appealing for their marketing potential.
