Abstract
In my thesis Depicting the Despicable I analyse the manner in which the great war is portrayed in each of them. For my analysis I separated the filmic elements, mainly image and narrative, and the gameplay elements of Battlefield 1, 11-11: Memories Retold, and Valiant Hearts: The Great War. In the end the three games show two different ways of portraying the war: Battlefield 1 portrays the war in the same way that war was viewed before 1914, mainly as an adventure with minor casualties on the ones own side. Whereas Valiant Hearts and 11-11 portray the war much more as a conflict in which the participants, the common infantry soldiers, were participants for many different reasons, some that had nothing to do with nationalism or hate towards the enemy.
