Abstract
This thesis aims to explore the developments of the representations of gender in Disney movies over time. This work will focus both on more recent developments, as well as on movies that have been out there for a longer period of time. By analyzing three case studies, Snow White, Mulan and Brave, this study aims to construct an idea about gender representation and its developments over time. Through the use of gender theories from Simone de Beauvoir, Laura Mulvey and Judith Butler, in combination with mise-en-scene, an analysis that focuses on gender representation will be carried out for the three case studies Snow White, Mulan, and Brave. The analysis’ findings conclude that over the last decades Disney movies have become increasingly progressive when it comes to the representation of women. They are more and more breaking away from the traditional patriarchy, and are moving towards a world in which women are strong and independent.
