Abstract
Circular economy is an economic system based on the organization of joint business models that seek to preserve value by redesigning production and consumption processes in a way that slows, closes, and/or intensifies the use of resource flows, which lead to the creation of multiple values for economy, society, and environment. Transitioning from a linear to a circular economy calls for organizations to adopt new strategies and business models that are configured according to the logic of value preservation. Hence, this thesis addresses this need with the following research question: What strategies and circular business models are there to address value preservation? Few authors have contributed to this discussion by proposing typologies or taxonomies of circular business models, but none have grouped them under strategies for value preservation. To this end, a literature review on CE, BM and strategy was performed, culminating in the development of a typology of value preservation strategies and circular business models. These models include: Long-lasting product model, Product life extension model, Encourage sufficiency model, Servitization model, Digitalization model, Circular supplies model, Circular products model, Resource recovery model, and Platform model. Future research to study the occurrence of these circular business models may shed light on their configurations and the underlying building blocks. This may lead to revisions of existing business model literature, seeing as value is organized in a fundamentally different way in a circular business model.
