Abstract
In this paper, a new model of multilingual processing, called Multilink model, is developed that can account for cognate processing, bilingual semantic priming, and word translation. To provide a theoretical background, principles of computational modeling are first discussed, followed by a consideration of influential psycholinguistic models for word perception and production. As a first exploration of the model's capabilities and properties, simulation studies of basic psycholinguistic phenomena (such as word frequency, word length, and semantic priming effects) are presented. Next, a comparison is made of simulation results to actual empirical data with respect to lexical decision and language decision. In the general discussion, the model's performance is evaluated. A positive aspect of the model is its capability of processing words from different languages and of different lengths and of simulating the translation of words across languages. Some possibilities for future research are also considered.
