Abstract
The impact of a total laryngectomy on verbal communication is extensive. This research included a repeated measures design to investigate the differences in prosody of speech between two recordings; before and after a total laryngectomy. The speech after the total laryngectomy was produced with the help of a voice prostesis. Acoustic and perceptual approaches were used to report the differences between speech recordings. Recordings that were used for the experiments included the vowel /a/ and voiced sentences, produced by patients of the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital in Amsterdam before and after a total laryngectomy. The vowel /a/ and the voiced sentences were both analyzed acoustically. Also, the voiced sentences were used in a listening experiment. Professional listeners had to score the prosodic accent in the recordings. Results show worsened prosodic characteristics in speech after a total laryngectomy, in comparison to before a total laryngectomy.
