Abstract
The world’s population is growing at a rapid rate, especially developing countries like Indonesia are experiencing and have seen a tremendous increase in population. Due to this increase in population, a rise in human settlements is necessary. However, safe places to live become rarer. There is a sharp increase in settlements that are being built in disaster-prone areas. The code river area in Yogyakarta is one of those disaster-prone areas where people have built settlements. Every year during the rainy season the people that live in the code river area are threatened by the possibility of floods and volcanic lahars. Most of the people that nowadays live in the code river area are the offspring of rural farmers that migrated to Yogyakarta during the 1950’s and 1960’s. The first people that settled in, what is now known as the code river area, were in a financially bad position. Little has changed since then, most of the people are still poor. This research looks at the situation that is present in the code river area from an environmental justice perspective. And seeks to explain why people live in a disaster-prone environment and how this influences the lives of those people.
