Abstract
This thesis is a case study about the Dubai International Financial Centre (or DIFC). DIFC is a Free zone in Dubai. Free Zones are free trading zones in a dedicated area to promote foreign direct investments in countries where this otherwise wouldn’t occur. Free Zones are an important keystone for the development of Dubai and its emergence to one of the most important cities in the Arab world and Africa. Dubai holds multiple Free Zones to attract foreign companies to invest in the region. One of the main advantages of these free zones is that there are no taxes. The DIFC is the most important financial centre for the MENA-region as well as the rest of Africa. The DIFC is a free zone developed especially for financial services and it is part of the financial heart of Dubai. With the development of the DIFC the ruler of Dubai tried to become an important economic hub. This thesis is a case study on theories on Free Zones as well as theories on related on banking to investigate DIFC as a free zone and as a financial centre.
