Abstract
This thesis further develops the theory on the relationship between social capital and resource management within a social-ecological system that is threatened by disruption. It does this by applying this presumed connection to a case of illegal logging in a Gambian village that started after the recent political transition in the Gambia. This is done by mapping the actors and their motivations and actions that played a role within the social-ecological system in the village. From this, it becomes clear that there were problems with all three forms of social capital (trustworthiness, networks and institutions) in the village. Therefore, this thesis strengthens the assumption already present in the literature that there is a connection between the degree of social capital and effective resource management.
