Abstract
This thesis explores Althusser’s notion of ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses
in the serialisation Wolf Hall by Peter Kosminsky. It analyses society along the lines of
ideology, Ideological State Apparatuses, but also Karl Marx’s Repressive State Apparatuses.
This thesis will try to answer how ideology is represented in Wolf Hall in relation to society
and individual male and female gender roles and class. Within this Tudor society this thesis
sets out to analyse the individual characters of Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn,
and Jane Seymour in order to see how they are influenced by the societal structures. The
societal structures will then also be linked to class and gender aspects. Chapter one will
provide a theoretical framework explaining Althusser’s key terms and concepts, along with
Marxist theory about dominant classes. The second chapter provides an analysis of the Tudor
society. The third chapter will focus on the individual characters within this society and their
concerns with class and gender.
