Abstract
Embroidery can be a gateway to engage with the production of knowledge. This Master’s thesis follows the lead to delineate what kind of knowledge can be related to material culture and contemporary craft practices. This research explores how the formation of personal and collective identities unfold through the making of embroidery. I address needlework through the lens of anthropologist Tim Ingold and his notion that the process of making is able to produce knowledge, allowing new becomings. Philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s concept of becoming will be used to relate the materiality of embroidery to the identities that might emerge from this engagement. Finally, I tie the processes of formation of individual and collective identities to the practice of embroidery. Ten stories of practitioners have been selected as examples. They present aspects of personal change through the practice of embroidery and deal with the initiatives in the social sphere.
