Abstract
Propagation of novel language is key in studying language change. Previous studies on linguistic representation malleability show that people with smaller networks tend to adopt changes more. This thesis studies the eff ect of network size on changes in language production, speci cally: adoption of hashtags on Twitter. Results show that indeed network size significantly predicts likelihood of adoption. These findings contribute to understanding how rare novelties are propagated among the population and cause language to evolve.
