Abstract:
This thesis focuses on images of Rome that can be found in the travel writings of twelve Dutch Rome-travellers between 1859-1870. Discussing both published and non-published writings, I have argued that in creating these images, the travel writers were on the one hand highly influenced by other authors who had written about Rome before them. On the other hand, the travel writers' political, religious and social backgrounds, and the nineteenth-century Dutch social debate played a huge role in the realisation of these writings.
