Abstract
Demographic developments in the Netherlands of the last decade were mainly characterised by strong
growth rates. However, the Netherlands is currently facing marginal population growth, in which some
regions face demographic decline. The predictions are that demographic decline will spread across the
whole Netherlands and in the near future even more regions will face population decline. Many
scientists argue that this decline will have a major impact on various fields of our society. The labour
market is one of the fields where the effects of population decline will become visible. The relation
between demographic decline and the economy (including the labour market) is not an easy one-way
relationship, but complex, reciprocal and with self-reinforcing effects. Population decline and ageing
do have consequences for the economy, but economic and labour market developments are also
influencing the demographic developments. This reciprocal relationship and demographic decline is
the main focus of this study.
Only occasionally will scientists focus on this reciprocal relationship between the demography
and economy (including the labour market), with special attention for demographic decline. Hence,
the consequences of demographic decline for the labour market are still unknown. Further elaboration
on this relationship is needed. Besides the scientific relevance of this study, this study also has societal
relevance. A key element of the societal relevance is the essential role the labour market plays in
today’s society; almost every individual will take part in the labour market for a long period in his or
her life. The objective of this research is therefore:
To create further insights in the reciprocal relation between demographic developments and
functioning of regional labour markets, especially in regions which are facing demographic decline. This
will lead to recommendations in order to come to a better equilibrium on the regional labour markets.
Given the research objective, the main research question is formulated as follows:
Into what extent are demographic developments of influence on the equilibrium of regional labour
markets in the Netherlands and is this relationship reciprocal?
