Abstract
Art festivals and museums both offer an experience relating to art and culture. These experiences are, however, very different from each other. The goal of the research is to help both museum practitioners as well as arts festival organizers gain an understanding in the workings of creating a rich museum experience, and to point out the differences between art festivals and museums. The creation of the museum experience is placed into three different categories or themes relating arts festivals and museums. These themes are experience, the museum’s context, and the engaging museum. Each theme is discussed in a separate chapter with a separate sub question, discussing relevant literature and best practices. From these discussions and analyses of the best practices, it becomes apparent that art festivals and museums have different strengths regarding the creation of a museum experience. Their appeal to the public can be explained by taking a look at these strengths. Both museums and art festivals have strengths in each category. These strengths itself and their roots differ between museums and art festivals. The strengths of the ‘conventional’ museum, for example, all originate from the permanent nature of this type of museum. The strengths of the art festivals, however, are in part due to the temporary nature of the exhibition and in part due to the nature of the exhibition’s content.
