Abstract
This research investigates the outcomes and predictors of investments in sustainable management by manufacturing firms. To investigate possible predictors of investments in sustainable management, this research examined the influence of energy consumption at firm-level and energy consumption at sectoral-level. Additionally, the effect of investments in sustainable management on a firm’s environmental performance and financial performance have been researched. In order to answer the research questions, a mixed-methods study has been conducted. For the quantitative analysis, data from the European Manufacturing Survey (2015) has been used. To conduct the qualitative study, interviews have been held with manufacturing firms. The quantitative analysis of this study made clear that investments in sustainable management positively influence the environmental performance of a firm. Besides that, the quantitative analysis found that energy consumption at firm-level adds significant statistical effect for explaining investments in sustainable management. Furthermore, the quantitative analysis found a combined effect of both energy consumption at firm-level and energy consumption at sectoral-level on investments in sustainable management. The qualitative analysis mainly complements these findings and found that there are certain influences at sectoral-level which positively influence firms to invest in sustainable management, such as laws and regulations and the reputation of a sector.
