"How simple and frugal a thing happiness is": Exploring simplicity in Greek tourism discourse

Abstract
This research aims to answer the following question: What is the “simplicity concept” and how is it represented in the Greek tourism discourse and particularly in a digital campaign promoting the island of Crete? To delve into the campaign’s discourse of simplicity, I use a mixed-method approach, combining literature review with critical discourse analysis. I first investigate the interpretations of this concept in tourism literature, where simplicity is restricted to discussions around authenticity, slow travel and food tourism experiences. In order to explore the full potential of simplicity in tourism discourse, I also embark on a brief exploratory research into this notion in other areas of study—from arts and literature to philosophical works. By pursuing this strategy, I attempt to unfold more qualities of simplicity that might prove relevant to the representations of the concept in the tourism promotion of Crete both within and beyond the studied campaign.
