Abstract
Humanitarian aid is often seen as a most needed tool to help people suffering from a crisis. Using many analogies of Palestinian NGO workers and researchers, this study provides many insights into the violent effects of humanitarian aid in Palestinian society. Using Turner’s argument on the success of peacebuilding in Palestine, in which peacebuilding is successful, not in providing peace but in implementing counterinsurgency in Palestine, I argue that humanitarian aid is also successful in Palestine. Not in responding to Palestinian requests for help, but rather in further extending mechanisms of oppression into Palestinian society. Intentionality and the strategic use of humanitarian means not only support this argument but simultaneously shows its distinctive character trait, setting it apart from structural violence. In doing so, this study provides extensive theoretical context and a descriptive collection of Palestinian perspectives on the working of humanitarian aid in Palestine and its devastating effects.
