Abstract
Climate change is of high concern for human rights, public health and socio-economic justice because of its disparate impacts and the disproportionate effects on vulnerable and socially marginalized populations. It is more difficult for vulnerable group to anticipate, cope with, resist and recover from the impacts of extreme weather events. This research explores two case studies in the municipality of Rotterdam and Groningen to investigate the implementation of green infrastructures. In-depth interviews and a document analysis are conducted as a method in this study. This research shows that for the theory of environmental justice it is necessary to include recognitional and procedural justice in addition to distributive justice. The degree to which these three dimensions are achieved varies from one municipality to another. An important point here is that how the initial process of decision-making is set up has a great effect on the outcomes. For the municipalities, it is therefore important to look at these decision-making processes in order to improve these processes and work towards more equitable outcomes. To be able the give a broader picture of environmental justice in the Netherlands it is necessary to further research municipalities that are not included in this study.
