Abstract
Despite the growing interest in Beauvoir’s thinking, her indebtedness to Heidegger remains largely overlooked. The few scholars who have examined Beauvoir’s appropriation of Mitsein interpreted this Heideggerian concept as either being an ontological fact or have argued that Beauvoir’s appropriation upholds (gender)oppression. Rather than dismissing those interpretations, this article will bring them together by arguing that although “original Mitsein” is an ontological fact of human existence, Mitsein concretely manifests itself in our intersubjective relationships as either inauthentic or authentic. In contrast to other scholars, this article aims to provide an ethical framework that understands Beauvoir’s “original” Mitsein in light of her existentialist ethics and her thinking on freedom as collective task.
