Abstract
The Kingdom of the Netherlands is a Trans-Atlantic alliance of a European country. Despite a shared history, knowledge about the six islands of the Dutch Kingdom is limited. Since 10-10-10, Curaçao and Saint Martin became autonomous countries within the Kingdom. Additionally, Bonaire, Saba and Statia became public entities: overseas municipalities of the Netherlands. Therefore, the Dutch government became largely responsible for the implementation of government tasks. However, there is still a certain mismatch in Dutch policies. This research has a focus on the mismatch that currently exists in cultural policy for the islands. Although the national cultural policy calls for a diverse and inclusive policy, the system does not seem to be open to all institutions within the Kingdom. This research aims to highlight how a postcolonial discourse persists and impedes the development and establishment of culture in the islands. For the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom there is a lack of adequate funding by the government or structural funds for arts and culture. There is a certain mismatch between what is considered important culture which is mainly based on Western cultural identity. Due to certain cultural bias, and a lack of knowledge, some cultural heritage and expressions are not classified as such because they are simply not recognized.
