Abstract
For decades our economy has been ‘linear’, which means that resources taken from the ground are used to make a product we use, and when we no longer want the product, we will throw it away. This current system has a significant effect on the environment: the world faces challenges such as loss of biodiversity and pollution in soil, water, and air. One of the most impactful ways to address climate change and rebuilding biodiversity is changing the agri-food system. The current way food is produced has put a heavy burden on our planet. To make a shift to a sustainable food production system, circular agriculture as part of a view of circular economy is proposed as a preferred organisation, where the focus lies on optimal use of waste streams. To shift to circular agriculture, a sustainability transition is needed. This transition process consists of three building blocks: pathways, patterns, and events. Although authors acknowledge the third building block, the theoretical and conceptual understanding of an event and its role in a transition pathway remains unclear. This study aims to contribute to the transitional process knowledge by further conceptualising events in the Dutch beer value network.
