Abstract
With the growing attention for the heat transition, there is a growing pressure on the role residents play in this transition. To research this role and with this the influence of residents on the transition the term mental ownership is used. Mental ownership is seen as people taking or having responsibility for a process, object or neighbourhood wanting to protect this or make it better, and is closely related to commitment, engagement, involvement and a sense of belonging. In this research the focus is thus on the engagement and involvement of residents in the heat transition process and the aspects determining this engagement and involvement. Within the research four pillars are found that influence the development of mental ownership of residents. The first pillar is the genius loci of a neighbourhood with social and physical characteristics. The genius loci forms the motive of mental ownership development, and is the basic mental ownership of residents before the process starts. The informal engagement processes, control and collaborative institutional process are the other three pillars, the mechanisms, developing the mental ownership as set by the genius loci.
