Abstract
This thesis occupies with the way a densifying Oostkanaalhaven can meet city-wide challenges, which urban processes and key elements are important within this transformation process, and what interests of users of Oostkanaalhaven need to be preserved to achieve a transformation supported by its users. This research consults several theories around Lefebvre’s spatial triad. Document study, observation, survey and interviews served to investigate how the literary insights apply to Oostkanaalhaven. It emerged the municipalities, entrepreneurs and local residents are in many ways opposed to each other. Entrepreneurs want to preserve the industrial working area. Residents want to use the favourable location and assets for light and creative industry. Currently, the municipality has no clear picture of the area in mind - Oostkanaalhaven could meet city-wide housing and workplace shortages. To properly densify Oostkanaalhaven, fragmented land ownership, recognition of assets, and circularity are key elements, linked to the overarching economic-, spatial- and societal domains. It is essential to listen to entrepreneurs and recognize their socially essential business operations. The municipality has to combine those insights with the wish of local residents for light industry and more greenery. This research provides insights for further exploration of supported urban densification in Oostkanaalhaven after 2030.
