The last decades of the nineteenth century were turbulent times for Dutch literature. In particular the authors belonging to the Beweging van Tachtig are reminded, but the fin de siècle also brought forth many authors whose name did not make the canon, while the influence or popularity of these writers hasn’t been negligible. One of them is William Gerard van Nouhuys (1854-1914); author of poetry, prose and drama and much sought critic for various journals. This study aims to define the role of W.G. van Nouhuys in the literary field of the Dutch fin de siècle, between the critics and writers of the Tachtigers and Negentigers. Van Nouhuys’ drama, prose and critics are mapped and analysed through three different analyses in order to get a better idea of the formal and substantive aspects of his work. These analyses show Van Nouhuys as a doubting and searching writer. Stylistically he is a traditional author, but his themes are clearly influenced by the leading movements of the nineteenth century. His work shows particularly naturalistic and symbolic influences. As a critic he is rather preserved and analytically. In his criticism he tries to be as objective as possible and he goes to extremes to support his statements with convincing arguments. As a critic he fulfils the role of in the literary field.en_US
