This thesis aims to answer the question: In what state does the novel finds itself since the year 2000 and to what extent do adaptations influence this state? The first chapter is concerned with trying to establish what we understand to mean when we refer to novels, and with analysing the ongoing discussion being held by authors, critics and academics. With this as a premise, a conclusion is made about the recent state in which the novel finds itself. The novel is not dead but certain types of novel are disappearing. The next chapter provides an overview of some of the work written about adapting novels to film. The last chapter outlines the kinds of influence that adaptations have on the state of the novel and goes to argue that the influence the film industry and adaptations have on the state of the novel is mostly a positive one.en_US
