dc.description.abstractThe social, political and economical unrest in the Arab World is undeniable. The Arab Spring has not only changed North Africa but also changed the geopolitical situation between the South and its partners. Especially the relationship with Algeria is distinct. Algeria has a history of French colonial rule ending with Independence War. Years later a civil war against the oppression of dictatorship led by Boumediene in the 1990s began. Current president Bouteflika brought Algeria order and peace and recently started negotiations on participating in the European Neighbourhood Policy. The European Neighbourhood Policy is a policy framework designed by the European Union to interact with and decide on developments in its surroundings. The E.U. and Algeria have been trying to develop an optimal policy and institutional configuration that resembles the interests and potential of both partners. However, despite supporting neighboring countries on an economical, political, technical and financial level, the ENP has been the subject of ongoing debates. The geopolitical approach has been labeled ‘Eurocentric’ and has been compared to forms of neocolonialism. In this thesis, the Algerian and the E.U. motives for and perspectives on cooperation will be analyzed, even as the ENP developments in Algeriaen_US
