Abstract
Since the Second World War, the Dutch orchestras are financed by the Dutch government. Because of that, orchestras lost their connection with the public. In 2010, State Secretary for Education, Culture and Science Halbe Zijlstra wanted to change this reliance on governmental funds and cut the budget for culture with 125 million euros. This led to firm debates about the danger of losing funds and having to rely on the vision of the public or of private funders. Opponents of Zijlstra saw governmental funding as a premise for the preservation of their autonomy. However, the influence of governmental demands concerning the subsidies have impact on the identity of the orchestras. In this thesis the holistic AC3ID-model of John Balmer is used to analyze the impact of governmental requirements and collaborations at two Dutch orchestras, Het Balletorkest and philharmonie zuidnederland.
