Abstract
During the eighteenth-century Grand Tour, Rome attracted a lot of young noblemen from all over Europe. They hoped to see the revived glory of ancient Rome, but were often disappointed in seeing the state of its ruins. This thesis therefore explores several areas of tension. Furthermore, these are compared with the experiences of a Dutch Grand Tourist: Hendrik Fagel the younger. It appears that the tension between past and present was not only lamented: rather, signs of decay could also be appreciated as being beautiful.
