Abstract
The social policy of Philips N.V. has played a major role since the foundation of the company. Since the last decennia of the twentieth century the social policy started to crumble increasingly. Although previous studies about Philips’ social policy have been written, there are no studies yet that deal with the employers’ experiences of the social facilities Philips offered. Therefore this study uses the method of ‘oral history’, through which in-depth personal stories are acquired by interviews. In this case, 10 (ex)-Philips-employees have been interviewed. The questions were centered on Philips’ social facilities education, healthcare, housing and recreation. In conclusion, there were also questions raised about a certain kind of ‘Philips-sentiment’. This study proposes the following research question: ‘How did the social policy of the Dutch electronics concern Koninklijke Philips N.V. develop and ! what was the experience of men and women, who worked at Philips Eindhoven during 1960-1990?’
