Abstract
Computer vision has gained an important place in the agricultural sector. It is used to measure and grade agricultural products such as potatoes, apples and oranges. Most of these systems rely upon dedicated and expensive computer vision setups. Within this thesis, an inexpensive and portable grading system for potato tubers is presented. The presented system utilises 2D and 3D computer vision techniques to estimate the length, width and square mesh size of a potato tuber. The rapid adaptation of smartphones and smartglasses (such as the Google Glass) has made it possible to capture and process images at relatively low costs. Within this thesis, the use of a smartphone and smartglass as a inexpensive system for mobile potato grading is investigated. The results of this thesis show the potential of inexpensive potato grading based on 2D and 3D computer vision for images captured with mobile devices. The future of agricultural grading can be mobile!
