Abstract
The question central to this study is: how is the provision of social support to homeless aliens organized in law and practice and how could it be improved? The research objective is to provide recommendations to the agents involved in the provision of social support to homeless aliens on how to improve the organization of those provisions. This objective is achieved by applying a Bourdieusian perspective on the meaning of aliens' welfare rights to the struggle between the national government, municipalities and nongovernmental organizations over the logic of alien law in the Netherlands. It is explained how some voices are turned into noises and possibilities are discerned to turn those noises back into voices again. This study demonstrates the value of the relational- and reflexive perspective of Bourdieu for the study of social reality and contributes to the existing literature on immigration- and public policy in various ways.
