Abstract
This thesis analysed how news functioned within the context of Gelderland during the years 1618-1648. It focussed on the interplay of three different types of news media: orally transmitted, written, and printed media.
By focussing on three case studies, these three types were examined. First, the newspaper of Arnhem (the Arnhemsche courante) was analysed. Second, the thesis dealt with news in personal correspondence. Lastly, the diary of an Arnhem citizen, David Beck, was used to discover how orally transmitted news functioned and also how these three types worked together.
In historiography, it is often presumed that printed news was most important for the news consumer in the seventeenth century. This is however not the case. Contemporaries assessed the news based on social character of the news: the more personal contact with the medium, the more they trusted the news.
